Sustainability

Our aim at Ocean Flo is to reduce our carbon footprint in as many ways as possible. By using sustainable swim fabrics we help to reduce waste, water and emission for a cleaner and healthier environment. Swimwear that are not sustainable is generally made from virgin polyester or nylon which is not biodegradable.

The production of nylon is similar to that of polyester, with similar environmental consequences. Like polyester, nylon is made from a non-renewable resource (oil) in an energy-intensive process. It sheds microplastic fibers that end up in waterways and oceans every time it is washed, and because it is not biodegradable, it will end up sitting in a landfill at the end of its product life cycle.

As an organization, Ocean Flo supports the apparel and textiles sector in switching to preferable materials that have a more positive impact on people and the environment compared to conventional. Recycled nylon is considered a preferred alternative to virgin nylon and bio-based nylons (produced with renewable raw materials) potentially offer a promising alternative.

The eco friendly material we have chosen to use is called ECONYL, the first post-consumer recycled nylon to hit the market from Italian manufacturer Aquafil. Econyl is made of nylon waste from landfills and oceans in a closed-loop process and is infinitely recyclable. According to Aquafil, Econyl avoids about 50 percent of carbon dioxide emissions and uses about 50 percent less energy compared to virgin nylon yarns.

Durability and Reversible

Our purpose in reducing our carbon footprint correlates to reducing to the amount of landfill we contribute to. Therefore with this in mind, we have created swimwear that not only lasts longer but provides two bikinis in one. Our pieces are made with double Lycra which is more expensive process than using lining, but lasts longer. Our multi-way wear and reversible swimwear allows you to create multiple variations and a variety of looks, creating a range of different styles with different colours that can all be mix and matched, therefore keeping your swimwear longer.

By choosing recycled swimwear, you are contributing to a greener future 💚
